A detailed study of tidal turbine power production and dynamic loading under grid generated turbulence and turbine wake operation

The paper presents an experimental campaign developed to contribute the current research considering operation of Horizontal Axis Tidal Turbines within stochastic flow conditions, namely turbulent and wake induced flows. was conducted at approximately a 1/20th-scale recirculating flume. Experiments were over five differing setups, yielding baseline low Turbulence Intensity case, two high turbulence cases upstream device generated cases. experiments range rotor velocities established, in novel way, by utilising both fixed speed braking torque control. analysis measurements statistically quantify conditions impinging on model-scale tidal turbine. power, thrust, blade root bending moment single recorded analysed against under showed that it may well be possible exploit accelerated region around turbine capture marginally higher power (6% increase) from downstream turbines. Lastly, found control scheme adopted has significant impact load fluctuations observed velocities.
